Florentine architect Filippo Brunelleschi faces the greatest challenge of his career. He designed a double dome system composed of eight pendentives joined by structures of 24 meridian and 10 parallel ribs . In this way the load was lightened and stability was improved. Brunelleschi also designed a system of scaffolding, which acted as support and allowed workers to access all areas of the dome during its construction. The bricks were laid in a herringbone pattern and the outer dome was covered with terracotta tiles, marked by eight white marble ribs.
The result was a self-supporting dome, that is, one that was capable of supporting itself, with an octagonal shape, an external diameter of 54.8 meters , an internal diameter of 45.5 meters and a maximum height of 116.50 meters. s.
