Florentine architect Filippo Brunelleschi faces the greatest challenge of his career. It was that day when work officially began for the construction of the dome that was going to cover the transept of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore , the most important temple in Florence . A work that would represent an ingenious solution to respond to one of the greatest challenges that architecture has had to face throughout history.
Our story begins in 1418, when the Opera del Cambodia Telegram Number Data Duomo launched a public competition for the construction of the cathedral's dome . The objective was to find a viable project that would finally allow the construction of the basilica to be completed, which began in 1296 , and which came to a standstill on two occasions, in 1304 and 1348. Seventeen participants tried to convince the jury that their idea She was the best.
Only two of them made it to the final phase, the already famous Lorenzo Ghibberti and a, until now little known, Filippo Brunelleschi . Given the brilliance of the two proposals, the jury decided that both would share the direction of the project. However, rivalry would soon begin to emerge, which would lead, after several errors, to the dismissal of Ghiberti in 1425 and the absolute prominence of Filippo.
Work began in 1420, more than a century after the beginning of the construction of the cathedral in a Gothic style that was the predominant current in Europe since the mid-12th century . A style that, however, was beginning to become obsolete and was incapable of providing answers to the challenge posed. Therefore, Brunelleschi looked for another source of inspiration, and found it in Agrippa's Pantheon.
He designed a double dome system composed of eight pendentives joined by structures of 24 meridian and 10 parallel ribs . In this way the load was lightened and stability was improved. Brunelleschi also designed a system of scaffolding, which acted as support and allowed workers to access all areas of the dome during its construction. The bricks were laid in a herringbone pattern and the outer dome was covered with terracotta tiles, marked by eight white marble ribs.
The result was a self-supporting dome, that is, one that was capable of supporting itself, with an octagonal shape, an external diameter of 54.8 meters , an internal diameter of 45.5 meters and a maximum height of 116.50 meters. s. Beauty and technology went hand in hand is one of the most impressive works of architecture developed up to that time, which symbolized the power and wealth of the Republic of Florence. _________________ Cambodia Telegram Number Data |
